Housing Assistance Programs Explained – Part of the Amplify Home Series

Posted By: Hannah Garcia Article of the Week,

Each new school year, approximately 70,000 students return to Austin ISD schools. Yet for more than 2,500 of these students, home is not a stable place. According to Project Help, AISD’s office of homelessness, these children are part of more than 1,100 families living in cars, staying with relatives, or moving frequently in search of stability.

Housing instability impacts far more than where a child sleeps at night. It affects academic performance, long-term health, and overall well-being. Students in stable housing have higher graduation rates, better grades, and greater opportunities for success. While most families experiencing housing insecurity include at least one income earner, factors such as domestic violence, medical challenges, or short-term unemployment can quickly push them into crisis.

In Austin, several programs provide rental assistance to help stabilize families. The Austin Apartment Association (AAA) has long supported these efforts through educating rental housing providers and forging partnerships with organizations serving these families. To further this mission, AAA will be joining the Amplify Home programming to host “Housing Assistance Programs Explained”, an educational luncheon on October 20th.

Speakers from the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA), SAFE Alliance, and Sunrise Navigation Center will share details about the programs they administer, address common misconceptions, and highlight the real-world benefits of participation for housing providers, in addition to sharing stories of families who these support programs have positively impacted.

Attendees will gain valuable insights into available resources and connect directly with key staff from these organizations, which are working to address critical housing needs in Greater Austin. For property managers and owners, engaging in housing assistance programs often brings added benefits, such as guaranteed rent payments, free advertising for available units, and other incentives. These partnerships create solutions that work for both residents and providers.

This event offers property managers, owners, and industry professionals the opportunity to discover new ways to strengthen their properties’ success while making a meaningful difference for families and children in Austin. Whether you are a seasoned professional or new to the multifamily industry, we encourage you to attend and see how these programs can help transform lives.
