Calling All Advocates!

Posted By: Hannah Garcia Article of the Week,

As a member of the Austin Apartment Association, your experience and perspective on policy are critical to our advocacy efforts. The work you do at your properties and in the community makes a meaningful impact, and we could not achieve our goals without you.

With the launch of AAA's new online community, the AAA Hive, we are introducing a new way for you to share your voice and provide direct input on how policy proposals affect your business.

In the Advocates group on the AAA Hive, the AAA Government Affairs team will keep you informed about local government activity and offer opportunities to engage and provide feedback. You will also be able to start and participate in discussions on issues impacting multifamily rental housing.

Our first post in the Advocates community focuses on the upcoming City of Austin Rental Fee Transparency ordinance, which the City Council will review at its May 28th meeting.

The City has released a draft “City of Austin Standard Disclosure Form” along with proposed regulations tied to the ordinance. We want your feedback:

  • Does this form capture all of the fees you charge at your property?
  • Is the "other" category sufficient for fees not specifically listed?
  • Would you use this form as is, or would you need to modify it?
  • Does your property already have a fee transparency process in place?
  • How would this proposal change when and how you communicate fees during the leasing process?

Properties may either create their own disclosure form or use the City of Austin Standard Disclosure Form.

The written disclosure form would need to be provided to a prospective tenant when:

  • Providing a lease quote
  • Before scheduling a property tour
  • Upon application submission
  • Before accepting any application-related payment

Join this conversation on the AAA Hive and let us know if the City of Austin disclosure form is sufficient or needs additional information. Your input will help shape how AAA represents the industry on this issue.
