Section One - INTRODUCTION
In mid 1987, the leadership of the Austin Apartment Association made the decision to begin the future planning process. This was initiated primarily because of the increasing awareness of the rapid rate of change impacting the rental housing industry. Leadership’s interest resulted in a recommendation to the Board of Directors to pursue the development of a formal strategic plan.
Rationale for Planning
The Association strongly believes that planning will:
1. Create a clear understanding why the Austin Apartment Association should continue to exist;
2. Maximize the Association’s current and future ability to successfully achieve it objectives;
3. Identify the flow of the Association as the future evolves;
4. Maximize the Association’s ability to shape rather than be shaped by external or internal environments;
5. Provide for accountability of leadership for continuity in achieving Association membership objectives.
What is Planning?
Planning is a thinking process out of which some informed judgments would be made as to how the future should be shaped. Embodied in the Association’s Plan are the informed judgments of the Board of Directors as to changes that are impacting our members and what role the Association will play as changes continue to occur. Above all, planning is not absolute! It must be continuous. And, planning is not the development of programs. These lie in the province of the committees, with Board of Director approval, to meet the objectives identified in the Plan.
The following are the major trends, assumptions and member expectations upon which the Strategic Plan has been validated and updated. Since they are dynamic, it will be the role of the Strategic Planning Committee each year to test them to insure the continued validity of the Plan. The objectives and strategies of the Austin Apartment Association, which follow, are the Association’s responses to the major trends and the issues that ensue.
The Austin Apartment Association is a trade association composed of diverse groups that represent and serve the rental housing industry. The purpose of AAA is to:

An objective is a broadly defined result, which the Association hopes to achieve on behalf of its members. It is responsive to identified trends and reflects the highest priorities of the Association. Each objective directly elaborates the aims of the Mission Statement.
A strategy is a measurable, relatively short-term result, which the Association expects to accomplish through the implementation of an operational program. Implementation of the programs related to specific strategies is outside the scope of the Strategic Plan and is the responsibility of Association leadership through the committees and staff.
