Austin Apartment Association Community Outreach Event Calendar
Click here to join the Community Outreach committee and explore the different programs we promote throughout the year.

All AAA members are encouraged to give back to the community. Giving just five hours a month and a helping hand to your favorite charity can be as valuable as a cash donation. Submit the hours you volunteer to the AAA Give 5 Drive. Any non-profit charity is valid for submission. Don't forget to include time you spend at charity walks and fun runs, and volunteering at your church or kids' schools. Most of all, remember to count any AAA Community Outreach committee meeting, project and event, too! Participation is on your honor. Come back to submit new volunteer time as often as you volunteer. Every month, we will recognize the AAA member who submits the most number of volunteers hours for that month.
Submit your volunteer hours in the Give 5 Drive!

Donate on-line year-round! Select "Doc & Gayle Young Food Drive" from the "category" pull down menu.
The Doc & Gayle Young Food Drive marks its 24th year in 2010. The drive is a two month-long campaign conducted by the Austin Apartment Association and members of the AAA Community Service committee each fall to raise funds in order to purchase family food packs. 100% of collected funds go toward buying family food packs for needy families and individuals in Austin.
Each food pack is purchased from the HEB at Congress and Oltorf has all the items necessary for a family of five to have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, including a 10-pound turkey. What’s more, a food pack contains enough food staples to feed a family of five for the next few days: a turkey, ten pounds of potatoes, stuffing, yams, corn, green beans, rolls, flour, sugar, beans, rice, fruit and more.
The Austin Apartment Association Thanksgiving Food Drive began in 1986 when the AAA Community Service committee, headed by association volunteer Steve Cartelli, raised $600 to feed hungry Austinites. In 2009, the committee raised over $40,000 in donations. AAA volunteer member Michael “Doc” Young has helmed the committee since 1987. Co-chairs Kim McGregor and Ben Wells recently joined Doc to help lead the crew.
October 2010
October charity spotlight on American Heart Association

On Tuesday, October 5, 2010, neighborhoods throughout austin are invited to join with thousands of communities nationwide for the 27th Annual National Night Out. National Night Out is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
- Generate support and participation in crime efforts
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community relations
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
On October 5, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., residents in neighborhoods throughout Austin and across the nation are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, firefighters and EMS paramedics. Events such as cookouts, block parties and neighborhood walks will all occur simultaneously throughout the city and nationwide. This evening is a great opportunity for citizens and law enforcement to partner up against crime. We are encouraging everyone to come meet your neighbors and commit to help law enforcement reduce crime in your community. It is time to show the criminal element that we as a society are not going to just sit back and let crime occur in our neighborhoods. APD will make every effort to have a 1st responder stop by each party that is registered by the deadline date of September 10, 2010.
